Research your Keywords
Think what keywords someone might type into a Search Engine when searching for products you sell or services you provide. Bear in mind that most "keywords" are actually phrases not single words. For example "used car dealer in Maidstone" is a more focussed phrase than "car dealer". Phrases that are more specific tend to be used by "buyers" rather than "browsers" when searching for products or services online.
So write down all the phrases that you were able to come up with. Make sure to consider geographical phrases if they are important to your customers and don't forget alternative words that could be used . Now look at the websites of your competition to get more ideas until you can come up with a list in the region of 20 to 30.
Now take say, 5 keywords from your list that you feel potential customers will use most frequently. Bear in mind that popular keywords are also competitive keywords and are often harder to achieve higher ranking with. If your goal is to obtain a high ranking for the term “home insurance”, be prepared for a long uphill slog to get there! Try to make your keywords the ones that are most relevant to your business and are neither riddled with vagueness nor extremely competitive. Make each phrase about three or four words long (ignore connecting words, in and etc.) like the one above.
